31 In the same way the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. 36 The soldiers also made fun of him, coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him written in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: ^{▼▼Other mss. lack written in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew} “This is the King of the Jews.”Matt 27:37; Mark 15:26; John 19:19

39 Now one of the criminals hanging there kept insulting ^{▼▼Or blaspheming} him, saying, “You are the Christ, ^{▼▼I.e. the Messiah} aren't you? Save yourself and us!”Matt 27:44; Mark 15:32

40 But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Aren't you afraid of God, since you are suffering the same penalty? 41 We have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he went on to say, “Jesus, remember me when you come into ^{▼▼Other mss. read in} your kingdom!”

43 Jesus ^{▼▼Lit. He} said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

John 19:17-27

17 Jesus Is Crucified Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43Carrying the cross all by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.Num 15:36; Matt 27:31, 33; Mark 15:21-22; Luke 23:26, 33; Heb 13:12 18 There they crucified him, along with two others, one on each side of him with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus from Nazareth, ^{▼▼Nazareth. 19:19 Or Jesus the Nazarene; the Gk. Nazoraios may be a word play between Heb. netser, meaning branch (see Isa 11:1), and the name} the King of the Jews.”Matt 27:37; Mark 15:26; Luke 23:38 20 Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

21 Then the Jewish high priests told Pilate, “Don't write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this fellow said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”

22 Pilate replied, “What I have written I have written.”

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, and took his cloak ^{▼▼Lit. and his tunic} as well. The cloak was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34 24 So they said to each other, “Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture that says,Ps 22:18

“They divided my clothes among themselves,

and for my clothing they threw dice.” ^{▼▼Ps 22:18}

So that is what the soldiers did.

25 Meanwhile, standing near Jesus’ cross were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.Matt 27:55; Mark 15:40; Luke 23:49; 24:18 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he kept loving standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”John 2:4; 13:23; 20:2 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.John 1:11; 16:32
